The Los Angeles Rams have been in the middle of a recent rut, and part of why has been the defense struggling to contain teams as of late.
Fortunately, for the playoffs, that will likely change with the return of breakout star safety Quentin Lake. Sean McVay revealed his practice window is opening, as Lake is poised for a return soon.
But that's not the only news with Lake recently. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler reports that the Rams and Lake have agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract extension.
Rams, Lake agree to $42 million extension
"The Rams and safety Quentin Lake have reached an agreement on a three-year extension worth up to $42M with $25.75M guaranteed, per sources," Fowler reported on New Year's Day.
Breaking out in a major way this season, Lake was set to hit free agency after 2025 and likely would've commanded a strong market.
But, instead of testing the open market, Lake and the Rams agreed to a new deal over the next three seasons. He's played just 10 games this season for the Rams due to injury, but has been one of the best defenders in the NFL.
Lake has missed time since Week 11 with a dislocated elbow, but not only is he getting this nice extension, he's also coming back to the practice field for the Rams just in time for the playoffs.

This season, Lake got his first career interception, has 10 passes defensed, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one sack, and 61 total tackles.
In coverage, he's allowed a quarterback rating of just 83.0, the best mark of his NFL career by far. On 47 targets, he's allowed 29 catches for 353 yards and one touchdown.
He's been a great nickel and safety for the Rams in his career, but this season has been a major breakout, and he's helped the Rams turn into a strong defense once again.
Of course, his absence has led the Rams to falter lately, but now that he's coming back, around $42 million richer, Lake and the Rams defense should take a step forward at the perfect time for the playoffs.
