The Las Vegas Raiders made a noteworthy on the trade market on Tuesday afternoon.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders shipped veteran quarterback Geno Smith to the New York Jets for draft capital.
“Trade: the Raiders are sending QB Geno Smith and a 2026 7th-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 6th-round pick," Schefter reported. "Smith returns to the team for which he started his NFL career for in 2013."
Following the trade, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini pointed of the Raiders’ noticeable void at quarterback following the deal and linked a 6-foot-5 ex-Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl quarterback to Las Vegas as a potential free agency replacement for Smith.
“So with Geno Smith out of Vegas, the Raiders need a veteran QB to help a potential young QB who could be joining their team,” Russini wrote on X/Twitter. “Kirk Cousins, Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz, and Jimmy Garoppolo are all available.”
It didn’t appear that Wentz was destined to be an NFL journeyman early in his career. After a respectable rookie campaign with the Eagles in 2016-17, the North Dakota product enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign in Philadelphia thanks to his impressive physical tools, elite mobility, pinpoint accuracy on the run, and sound footwork in the pocket.
Unfortunately, Wentz tore his ACL toward the end of his MVP-caliber season in Philadelphia (3,296 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions), which marked the beginning of his injury-prone ways/decline with the Eagles.
The Eagles traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, and he hasn’t been the same since.
Still, it’s fair to state that the 33-year-old’s proven success in the pros and encouraging glimpses during the 2025-26 season make him among the best free agent quarterback options for the Raiders.
Time will tell if Las Vegas feels compelled to target the once-ascending signal caller, though.
