Giannis Antetokounmpo is almost certainly a goner from the Bucks this offseason after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that “Two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has not made any firm decisions, but for the first time in his career, he is open-minded about whether his best fit is remaining in Milwaukee – or playing elsewhere.”
That’s a long way of saying Antetokounmpo is seeking a trade. His reps and Charania are clearly on good terms since this was positioned as a long, difficult discussion.
Action Network’s Brandon Anderson has a solution for Antetokounmpo that’d set the Bucks up for long-term success while delivering their all-time greatest player a chance to win in his 30s: dealing him to the Spurs for the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, which most expect to be ex-Rutgers Scarlet Knight Dylan Harper and former national champion UConn Husky Stephon Castle.
Antetokounmpo would assume a ball-dominant role in San Antonio, shifting De’Aaron Fox to a spot-up shooting role. That’s a scary proposition considering Fox’s three-point shooting fell off a cliff in 2024-25.
Far more importantly than Fox’s fit with Giannis would be Victor Wembanyama’s. There are concerns about bringing in a ball-dominant player to take the alpha mantle from Wemby so soon.
Castle and Harper would instantly rebuild Milwaukee’s backcourt after Damian Lillard’s Achilles tendon tear in April. Lillard is certain to miss the 2025-26 season and may have already played his last game in a Bucks uniform.
This deal solves a lot for both teams, but probably overcomplicates things for the Spurs.
