After the Dallas Mavericks made the unforgivable decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last February, the untouchable level suddenly became less prevalent in the big leagues.
If a unique superstar like Doncic can get traded midseason, it’s safe to say that any player could find themselves with a different franchise in the blink of an eye. In Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey's opinion, there’s a realistic Golden State Warriors trade scenario involving Stephen Curry.
Specifically, Andy’s trade concept would swap Curry for an up-and-coming Charlotte Hornets trio.
“Stephen Curry is almost certainly near the end of his career,” Bailey wrote Thursday. “So, although he's still one of the most productive guards in the NBA, he doesn't have the same kind of trade value as SGA (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander), (Nikola) Jokic, Wemby (Victor Wembanyama) or Luka.”
“His legacy and the fact that he's spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors still makes him seem like an untouchable, though. And the team trading him without his blessing is almost unimaginable.”
“Having said that, the Charlotte Hornets are in Curry's home state. They have plenty of draft capital to send the Warriors' way. And LaMelo Ball and Kon Knueppel being able to play with Curry could be positively transformative for the rest of their careers.”
For clarity, the Warriors would send Curry to the Hornets for Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges, Collin Sexton, a 2026 first-round pick, a 2030 first-round pick, and a 2032 first-round pick.
Trading Curry would be a last-resort option for the Warriors. The seven-time NBA champions would love to keep Curry’s championship window open for as long as possible.
However, if Golden State decides that they can’t give their superstar point guard what he needs toward the end of his career, they could send him home (he’s a Charlotte, North Carolina native) and retool their roster for the future.
Miller, Bridges, and Sexton would all be solid rebuilding assets in a hypothetical trade centered around the best shooter in NBA history.
