Proposed Steelers-Packers trade adds young $4 million wide receiver to Pittsburgh's offense

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a shocking move, sending wide receiver George Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2026 third and a 2027 fifth.

The deal now leaves the Steelers with DK Metcalf (acquired in a trade this offseason), Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Roman Wilson, Ben Skowronek, Brandon Johnson, Lance McCutcheon, Roc Taylor and Ke'Shawn Williams in their wide receiver room.

If Pittsburgh is going into the upcoming season with one of Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard starting at quarterback, they're going to need solid weapons to throw to. And, if that's the case, they may need to add another wideout to the group.

Earlier this week, Last Word on Sports' Liam Rebellato proposed that the Steelers should swing a trade for fourth-year wide receiver Romeo Doubs before Week 1.

"Green Bay added receiver Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft, possibly reducing Doubs’ role," Rebellato wrote. "He’s shown red-zone ability, reliability to get open and is still on his rookie deal making him an attractive option."

Doubs, 25, played his college ball at Nevada from 2018-21, earning First-team All-Mountain West honors in his final two seasons with the Wolf Pack.

The Green Bay Packers selected Doubs in fourth round (No. 132 overall) of the 2022 NFL draft. Over the last three seasons, he's appeared in 43 games, catching 147 passes for 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns.

His 2024 season (46 receptions, 601 yards and four scores) earned him a 71.4 receiving grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking him 53rd out of 98 qualified receivers last year. However, the season also came with some issues, as he was suspended by the team after refusing to practice while frustration grew over his involvement in the team's offense.

With the talent that Green Bay has at wide receiver, they may want to move on from Doubs now and get something in return before he likely hits free agency next offseason.

In Pittsburgh, Doubs could slide in as a strong WR2 behind Metcalf and help whoever is throwing the ball to them in 2025. And, if that ends up being Aaron Rodgers, that's even better, considering the two played together in Green Bay in 2022.
