College basketball’s opening weekend already has a title game rematch on the board, and new ProphetX users can get in on it with promo code TSN, which unlocks a $40 prediction bonus for UConn vs. Michigan or any other college basketball game on Friday’s slate.
UConn and Michigan meet at 8 p.m. ET Friday at TD Garden in Boston as part of the TNT Sports Hall of Fame Series, with the game airing on TNT, truTV and HBO Max. It’s the first meeting since April, when Michigan beat UConn 69-63 in Indianapolis to win the program’s second national title. Elliot Cadeau scored 19 points that night and took home Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors, and he’s the only returning starter for the Wolverines. Rosters turned over on both sides, too, with just three of the 10 starters from that title game back for the rematch.
Earlier Friday night, James Madison visits Rupp Arena for the first meeting ever between the Dukes and Kentucky, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. ET on SEC Network. There’s a little homecoming feel to this one. JMU coach Preston Spradlin, a Kentucky native, got his coaching start as a graduate assistant in Lexington and spent 2009-14 on the Wildcats’ staff. Now in his third season in Harrisonburg, he brings a Dukes team that was picked second in the Sun Belt preseason poll.
College basketball season is here, and now is the perfect time to get started with ProphetX. New users can get started with the TSN promo code for a $40 prediction bonus. The Sporting News has everything you need to know about this weekend’s slate, along with how to get $40 worth of prediction bonuses on ProphetX.

UConn vs. Michigan value plays
- Michigan +7.5 (52.38% at ProphetX)
Seven months ago, Michigan was the one laying 7.5 points against UConn. Now the number has flipped to the other side, and I think the market overcorrected.
I get why. Michigan lost three frontcourt players in the top 12 of the NBA Draft: Morez Johnson Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg, and Aday Mara, and Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks. Mike Boynton Jr. was promoted from top assistant, so this is a new head coach running a new frontcourt against a top-five team in his second game.
That said, Boynton isn’t new to the big chair. He spent seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State before joining May’s staff, so he’s been through plenty of games like this one. He also inherited a roster that still ranks in the top 30 of most major metrics, which isn’t what a team in free fall looks like.
The Wolverines still have one of the best backcourts in the country, with Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney both making the preseason All-Big Ten team. McKenney and Roddy Gayle Jr. each scored 17 in Monday’s 84-68 win over Oakland, and Tennessee transfer J.P. Estrella gave them a legit interior presence with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Gayle is an underrated piece here, too. He’s a veteran wing who has hit big shots in big spots, and he gives Michigan a third ball-handler when UConn starts pressuring the guards.
UConn is going through its own reload. The Huskies had to replace Tarris Reed Jr. and Alex Karaban, two first-round picks who anchored that title-game roster. Reed was a monster on the glass, and Karaban was the glue guy who made everything work on both ends. Duke transfer Nik Khamenia and Seton Hall transfer Na’jai Hines looked good in their debuts, but replacing that kind of experience takes more than one game against Gardner-Webb.
That 40-point win was impressive, but it tells us very little about how this group handles a ranked opponent. Michigan is a very different test, with a veteran point guard who’s already beaten the Huskies on the biggest stage.
It’s also worth remembering how the last meeting played out against this exact number. The 7.5-point underdog covered in April, and that was with UConn facing a Michigan team loaded with future lottery picks. This version of UConn doesn’t have that kind of firepower edge over the Wolverines.
Cadeau is the guy I keep coming back to. A senior who controls tempo, takes care of the ball, and doesn’t rattle is exactly what you want when backing a dog in a neutral-site game. He can slow this game down, keep Michigan in its sets, and make UConn work for every possession. I could see UConn winning this, especially with a friendly crowd in Boston, but by eight or more is a big ask this early.
- Under 141.5 points (51.69% at ProphetX)
Both rosters are still figuring out who they are, and that usually shows up first on offense.
UConn is breaking in Duke transfer Nik Khamenia and Seton Hall transfer Na’jai Hines alongside returning guards Silas Demary Jr. and Braylon Mullins. Michigan is doing the same with a rebuilt frontcourt and a new coach calling the sets. Early November chemistry, a big arena, and a lot of new faces are a recipe for some clunky possessions.
The defensive identity in Storrs isn’t going anywhere, either. Dan Hurley’s group allowed just 65.1 points per game last season, which ranked 10th in the country, and the Huskies held Gardner-Webb to 25.5% shooting in the opener. Gardner-Webb isn’t Michigan, but the effort and length on that end looked like a typical Hurley team.
Demary is a big piece of this. The preseason Big East Player of the Year averaged 5.9 assists last season and is more of a table-setter than a gunner, which fits a half-court game where UConn grinds out possessions rather than racing.
The last time these two met, the total sat in the mid-140s and the game came in well below it. I’m not leaning on one game to make the case, but the same ingredients are here: two good defenses, two talented guards who like to slow things down, and plenty of motivation on both sides to make every bucket tough.
UConn vs. Michigan player props
- Trey McKenney over 14.5 points (57.26% at ProphetX)
Trey McKenney spent his entire freshman season coming off the bench, playing about 22 minutes a night behind a veteran rotation. He still averaged 9.9 points, which tells you how efficient he was with limited run. He shot 46.2% from the field, led Michigan in 3-pointers made during the regular season, and knocked down about 88% of his free throws.
Now the minutes are his. With the frontcourt that drew so much attention last season gone to the NBA, McKenney steps into a full-time starting role as the Wolverines’ most natural scorer on the wing.
We’ve already seen what happens when his role grows. After L.J. Cason tore his ACL in late February, Dusty May leaned on the freshman, and McKenney responded with 12 points per game in the postseason against the best competition he’d faced. That was still off the bench, too.
He’s a 6-foot-4, 225-pound guard who can stretch the floor, put it on the deck and finish through contact, so he doesn’t need one thing to go right to get to 15. On a night when Michigan figures to be playing from behind against a top-five team, the ball should find the shooter often.
James Madison vs. Kentucky value plays
- Kentucky -25.5 (50.25% at ProphetX)
Kentucky was up 31 with less than 10 minutes left in its opener, and Mark Pope still snapped a whiteboard over his knee during a TV timeout. He called the second-half slippage unacceptable, and the Wildcats let a 39-point lead slide into an 85-57 final that fell short of the spread. Don’t expect him to accept another letdown in front of Rupp Arena on Friday.
When Kentucky locked in, it was overwhelming. The Wildcats closed the first half on a 26-7 run and shot better than 60% from the field before Pope cleared the bench. Milan Momcilovic poured in 24 points on 6-of-9 shooting from deep, and the spacing he created opened things up for Zoom Diallo and Malachi Moreno inside.
The defense is what jumps out for this matchup. Alex Wilkins racked up seven steals in his debut, the most ever by a Wildcat in his first game, and that pressure lines up perfectly with JMU’s biggest problem right now. The Dukes committed 10 of their 12 turnovers after halftime in Monday’s 86-77 home loss to Miami (Ohio), then gave up 51 second-half points.
That kind of second half isn’t surprising for a group still learning each other. Preston Spradlin has 13 newcomers on a 15-man roster, and he even lost Justin McBride to Kentucky in the portal. Taking that group on the road for the first time into a sold-out Rupp Arena is a tough ask, and Kentucky has the depth to keep the margin growing even after the starters sit.
