In an unfortunate development, former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn has been hospitalised with meningitis, reported cricket.com.au. The cricket fraternity has wished him a speedy recovery as the 2003 World Cup winner is placed in an induced coma.

Sharing an update about his former teammate, former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist said:

"He is getting the best of treatment and (Martyn's partner) Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes."

Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg shared that the cricket community is extending their support to Damien Martyn amid distressing times for the cricketer. He said:

"I'm saddened to hear of Damien's illness. The best wishes of everyone at Cricket Australia and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time."

Meanwhile, several former cricketers took to X for Damien Martyn's speedy recovery. Legendary India spinner R Ashwin wrote:

"Thoughts are with @damienmartyn. Prayers to see him bounce back."

Former India cricketer VVS Laxman wrote:

"Sending strength and prayers to my dear friend @damienmartyn and his family. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery. The entire cricket world stands with you Matto during this tough time."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan added:

"All our thoughts are with you @damienmartyn x."

Damien Martyn's career in numbers

Damien Martyn enjoyed a 14-year illustrious international career with Cricket Australia. The right-handed batter represented the Aussies in 67 Tests, 208 ODIs, and four T20Is. In ODIs, he amassed 5,346 runs at an average of 40.80, including five tons and 37 half-centuries. He smashed an unbeaten 88 off 84 balls as Australia beat India by 125 runs to lift the 2003 World Cup title.

In Test cricket, Martyn scored 4,406 runs, averaging 46.37, hitting 13 tons and 23 fifties. The middle-order batter emerged as the leading run-scorer as Australia beat India 2-1 in the 2004-05 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It was Australia's first series win in India since the 1969/70 tour. Martyn scored 444 runs in four Tests, hitting two centuries and as many fifties.
