Portland Fire deliver storybook ending for first WNBA win in 24 years

The Portland Fire could not have scripted a more perfect ending for their long-awaited return to the WNBA. After 24 years without a victory, Portland finally delivered one of the league’s most emotional moments Tuesday night when Sarah Ashlee Barker scored a buzzer-beating putback to stun the New York Liberty 98-96 at a sold-out Moda Center.

The building erupted instantly. Players sprinted onto the floor. Fans jumped to their feet. And for the first time since the franchise officially returned to the WNBA this season, the Fire finally had a signature moment to call their own.

With the score tied in the closing seconds, Bridget Carleton launched a difficult three-pointer over Breanna Stewart. The shot missed badly off the side of the backboard, but Barker crashed the lane at exactly the right time, grabbed the rebound and flipped the ball in before the buzzer sounded.

It was messy. It was chaotic. It was unforgettable.

Sarah Ashlee Barker became part of Portland Fire history instantly

Barker finished with only five points off the bench, but none were bigger than the final two. The former first-round pick described the moment afterward as “surreal,” saying instinct simply took over once the rebound bounced her direction.

“I just saw the ball go to the side and I knew I had to crash,” Barker said after the game.

The timing made the moment even more emotional. Barker also revealed she had experienced a personal loss within her family shortly before the game, later calling the buzzer-beater a “God wink.” That perspective seemed to resonate throughout the arena as teammates mobbed Barker under the basket following the win.

For a franchise trying to reconnect with a city that waited more than two decades for women’s professional basketball to return, it felt like the exact kind of moment Portland had been craving.

Portland suddenly looks like a real WNBA problem

Beyond the emotional finish, the Fire looked impressive throughout the night against one of the WNBA’s premier teams. Carleton delivered the best game of her career with 26 points and four steals, while Carla Leite added 21 points and six assists. Kamiah Smalls chipped in 13 points in her team debut after missing training camp with a knee injury.

Portland also forced 18 turnovers and turned Moda Center into one of the loudest environments in the league. Head coach Alex Sarama said afterward that he wants opposing teams to dread coming into Portland. Tuesday night looked like a major step toward making that happen.

The Liberty were without Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally, but beating the defending champions still carried major weight for an expansion team searching for confidence.

And honestly, the ending could not have captured the spirit of this new-era Fire team any better. It was gritty, emotional, relentless and loud ,exactly the kind of identity Portland seems ready to embrace.
