Pop-Tarts Bowl, explained: What to know about additional edible mascots for 2025 bowl game

1 hour ago 1

It's the most wonderful time of the year, as college football's bowl season is well underway. One of the most intriguing bowl games in the lineup kicking off over the next couple of weeks is the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

This year's Pop-Tarts Bowl, played at Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla., will feature Georgia Tech and BYU. The bowl is one of college football's most famous because of the edible Pop-Tart mascot that accompanies the contest.

Yes, edible.

The winning team gets to enjoy consuming the game's Pop-Tart mascot on the field while basking in victory.

Pop-Tarts has sponsored the bowl game since 2023. The contest also features a trophy that includes a real, working toaster that you can cook Pop-Tarts in. Let's take a look at the edible mascot and what the game has planned for the 2025 edition.

Pop-Tarts Bowl edible mascot, explained

As far as mascots go, the Pop-Tarts are second-to-none. The game created life-size Pop-Tarts that have become a staple of bowl season. Look at these glorious pastries of pure joy:

Each team has a mascot officially representing it. The winning team then gets to eat its respective Pop-Tart mascot flavour. As far as the mascot being edible, that’s one of the best — or, to some folks, most disturbing — parts of the bowl game. At the end of the game, the winning mascot is dropped into a giant toaster on the field.

It comes out like this, for the team to enjoy:

The event's attention to detail is made all the more apparent during game day, when goalposts are cloaked in Pop Tart-like aluminum foil and sprinkles scrawl across the sidelines.

There's even a memorial for Pop-Tart mascots of the past.

What flavor is the edible mascot?

This year, we get a whopping six flavors, way up from previous years. All six will be roaming the sidelines. Three flavors will be representing each team, divided into Team Sprinkles and Team Swirls. Here's a look at the flavors featured for 2025:

Team Sprinkles

  • Protein Slammin’ Strawberry
  • Frosted Cherry
  • Frosted Cookies & Crème

Team Swirls

  • Frosted Wild Berry
  • Frosted Hot Fudge Sundae

Another thing unique about this year's matchup is that the teams added festive Pop-Tart-style sprinkles to each of their helmets. Look at these beauties:

Pop-Tarts Bowl trophy

The trophy is the hidden gem of this bowl game. It features an actual, working toaster that can warm up Pop-Tarts.

Pop-Tarts Bowl history

As we mentioned, Pop-Tarts sponsoring this bowl game has only been the case since 2023. But in fact, this game has been in existence since 1990. It was initially played outside the city of Miami before moving to Orlando, where it's been played since 2001. Here's a look at some of the past sponsors of the game.

  • Florida Tourism (2001)
  • Mazda (2002-03)
  • Champs Sports (2004-11)
  • Russell Athletic (2012-16)
  • Camping World (2017-19)
  • Cheez-It (2020-22)

2023's game featured Kansas State defeating NC State 28-19 in the inaugural Pop-Tarts Bowl. In 2024, Rocco Becht and Iowa State defeated Miami 42-41.

This year's matchup should be a great one. BYU finished the season 11-2, and Georgia Tech went 9-3. Saturday's game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET. BYU is listed as a slight 4-point favorite.
