Police K-9 bloodied after sinister felon bites off part of its ear during dangerous takedown

A barricaded suspect turned on a police K-9 during a South Bay takedown, biting and ripping off part of his ear, according to Redondo Beach police.

K-9 Wouter was sent into a Redondo Beach home to help officers take the suspect into custody during a standoff earlier this week. The encounter left the Dutch Shepherd injured and in need of veterinary treatment.

Wouter was rushed to ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital, where he is now recovering after the suspect allegedly bit the K-9 during the apprehension and tore off a portion of his ear, police said.

Photos released by the department show Wouter wearing a protective cone, with part of the tip of his ear visibly missing.

“WHO’S A GOOD BOY?! WOUTER IS!” Redondo Beach police wrote in a social media post.

The department said the suspect bit Wouter while officers were making the apprehension and tore away a portion of the dog’s ear.

Police have not released details about what the suspect was wanted for. They also have not said whether prosecutors will pursue additional charges related to the attack on the K-9.

Wouter is no ordinary patrol dog. The Dutch Shepherd was brought over from Holland and serves alongside Officer Adam Cook on the Redondo Beach Police K9 Team.

Dutch Shepherds are highly intelligent, athletic and loyal working dogs. Those traits make them valuable partners for demanding SWAT and law enforcement operations.

For now, Wouter is off the streets and recovering from the attack.

“Wishing our bestest boy a speedy recovery, and want him to get all the scratchies and treats!” the department wrote.
