(Bloomberg) — Poland has signed a final deal with Saab AB to purchase three submarines for around 47 billion kronor ($4.83 billion) as Warsaw seeks to bolster its maritime defense capabilities and forge closer ties with NATO ally Sweden.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government has increasingly sought to build military ties with European partners including the Nordic countries, France, and the UK as the war in Ukraine continues into its fifth year and Washington shifts its defense priorities elsewhere.

“We share the same views on the situation across the region,” Tusk said at a joint news conference in a Baltic port city of Gdynia. “We are convinced that the Baltic Sea must be peaceful, free from the shadow fleet, provocations and military threats.”

Under the agreement signed on Monday, Saab will deliver its three A26-type submarines by 2038. The contract includes a weapons, training and support package with Saab pledging to establish maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities in Poland. Separately, the east European country will lease an A17 submarine from Sweden as a stopgap for around 1.9 billion kronor.

The Baltic region has turned into a geopolitical flashpoint since Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine. In recent years, Poland’s coast has become a hub for energy infrastructure, making its crucial assets vulnerable to potential seaborne threats.

“We often say that the Baltic Sea has not faced such serious challenges for a very long time,” Swedish Premier Ulf Kristersson added at the same signing ceremony. “But thanks to our combined capabilities, the Baltic Sea has also never been as well defended as it is today.”
