A private jet has crashed at Statesville Regional Airport while landing on Thursday morning, and reports have linked the aircraft’s ownership to former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. The incident occurred around 10:15 am, triggering a large fire near the runway, and has since drawn attention from both aviation officials and the NASCAR community.
The airport issued an official update on Facebook shortly after the incident, confirming limited details at this stage:
“Incident at the Statesville Regional Airport. We can confirm there has been an aircraft incident at the Statesville Regional Airport. At approximately 10:15am, an aircraft crashed while landing. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is en route and will investigate the incident. No further details are available at this time. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.”The crash took place at Statesville Regional Airport in Iredell County. Local authorities have reported that a small passenger jet with seven seats went down during its landing phase. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately, while the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that it was en route to investigate the incident. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol are also at the scene as the response continues.
Subsequent reporting has added further context. According to Fox 8:
“The plane that crashed appears to be a Cessna Citation that is owned by the semi-retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, according to FAA paperwork. It is unclear who was aboard the plane at this time or the condition of any passenger.”The aircraft appeared to be a Cessna Citation business jet. FAA paperwork reportedly linked the plane to former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. Identified as a Cessna C550, it is registered with a tail number of N257BW to GB Aviation Leasing, an entity sharing the same address as Biffle.
Along with the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to lead the formal inquiry into the cause of the crash. Weather conditions might also be part of that review, as fog was reported in the area at the time. There are reports of multiple fatalities, but authorities have not released confirmed identities or casualty details.
