Pirates' Konnor Griffin already 164 ahead of Yankees' Derek Jeter in notable stat

Konnor Griffin's bat has taken a little bit of time to get going with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

What's already clear is that he has the potential to be an elite defensive shortstop.

Someone pointed that out on social media on Tuesday by comparing him to Derek Jeter. And if you're not a Yankees fan, this will likely make you laugh:

It's early, but Konnor Griffin (+2) already has 164 more career Defensive Runs Saved than Derek Jeter (-162). https://t.co/AYkGNNxtiL

Griffin is off to a fast defensive start.

But really, this is just a reminder that although Jeter had a Gold Glove reputation for much of his career, he was not a good fielder. He lacked the range that top shortstops do.

It's not worth dwelling on Jeter for too long here, though. The key is that Griffin is an all-around star.

That gives him a lot of ways to enhance value even when his bat isn't working. The Pirates don't need to worry about Griffin's bat quite as much while he's playing defense like this. They can trust that the stick will come around, and in the meantime, Griffin is simply making plays.

If he can start hitting, too, look out.

Griffin has the potential for greatness. The Pirates are awaiting him to start realizing it.
