Phillies trade deadline prediction would be very disappointing result

As the 2026 MLB trade deadline on August 3 approaches, the Philadelphia Phillies' top needs have come into focus. They really need to upgrade their No. 5 spot in the rotation, their high-leverage bullpen arms, and a right-handed hitting outfielder.

While all of those needs should have options available this summer for trade, it's going to be hard for the Phillies to find upgrades at all of those spots with a weaker farm system.

With that in mind, Matt Gelb of The Athletic predicted that the Phillies would make trades to address all three of those spots, but in a disappointing outcome, land just marginal upgrades at each spot.

"Given the sheer amount of their needs, the Phillies decide to spread it around and shoot for marginal upgrades in the outfield, rotation, and bullpen," Gelb predicts. "This might not seem quite bold, but the Phillies lack the prospect capital to take a bigger swing like they did last summer when acquiring closer Jhoan Duran."

Gelb is predicting that the Phillies' deadline outcome will address their three key needs, but those additions won't be the exciting ones to really spark hope for the fanbase.

Instead of Byron Buxton, Taylor Ward, Heliot Ramos, or even Mike Trout as their right-handed hitting outfielder, it could be Jo Adell or another fringe Major Leaguer as a depth piece.

While Tarik Skubal isn't realistic, the Phillies could go after Robbie Ray, Kevin Gausman, or Freddy Peralta. Instead, this prediction from Gelb would have the Phillies landing someone like Tyler Mahle or Tomoyuki Sugano instead as their new No. 5 starter.

In the bullpen, excluding Mason Miller, someone like Luke Weaver would be a dream pickup for the Phillies. But, a lesser option might be Brooks Raley, A.J. Minter, or Antonio Senzatela.

While the "marginal" bullpen upgrade might not be too terrible, the outfield and rotation upgrades with the same caveat would likely be very disappointing.

With the Phillies' recent struggles, it's hard to imagine this team as a serious contender if they don't find a way to seriously upgrade those spots this summer.

But Gelb is predicting that thanks to the weaker farm system, the Phillies will only make marginal upgrades this summer.

It would be a lackluster deadline if this prediction comes true, but unfortunately, Dave Dombrowski might not have a choice but to have such a deadline, barring trading all of their valuable prospects.
