The Philadelphia Phillies went out this postseason in a brutal loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. If they want to be able to stand up to the Dodgers’ superteam next year, they’ll need to find themselves another superstar.
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly believes they could find one in Detroit Tigers Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, who’s on his way out with the team. The Phillies have the capital to trade for him, and it could make their rotation unbeatable.
“Acquiring Skubal to join a rotation with Cristopher Sánchez and Zack Wheeler would give the Phillies a rotation that could rival their vaunted 2011 quartet of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt, particularly if Aaron Nola bounces back next season…Still, the Phillies are on this list because they have young prospects in Painter, Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller who could entice the Tigers. Alec Bohm is a change-of-scenery candidate who could make sense as a secondary piece going back to Detroit if it isn't comfortable with Colt Keith, Jace Jung and Zach McKinstry at the hot corner next season,” Kelly wrote.
This prospective trade might work however, as Kelly noted the Phillies were unwilling to give up Painter for Garrett Crochet last offseason, and this summer at the deadline. However, they should still try to find a way to make a deal with their other prospects and young talent.
With the addition of Skubal to headline the rotation, the Phillies would have a Cy Young winner and three All-Stars in their rotation. They would be the best rotation in the NL East, and arguably the NL.
Hopefully, the Phillies realize this, and start building a package to offer the Tigers. Many other teams will be vying for the ace, so the Phillies need to get their head start now.
