Phillies place Rafael Marchan on injured list, call up former Yankees, Marlins catcher

The Philadelphia Phillies recently promoted Bryan De La Cruz to the Major Leagues, and the corresponding roster move was to place backup catcher Garrett Stubbs on the injured list.

With J.T. Realmuto and Rafael Marchan still on the MLB roster, the Phillies didn't need a third catcher. But now, the Phillies have lost another catcher, this time, Marchan.

The Phillies announced that Marchan is hitting the injured list, and taking his place is a former Miami Marlins and New York Yankees 29-year-old catcher in Payton Henry, who will back up Realmuto for the next week or so.

"Prior to tonight's game against the New York Yankees, the Phillies placed catcher Rafael Marchan on the 10-day injured list (retro to 7/23) with left knee patellar tendinitis. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, catcher Payton Henry had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley," the Phillies announced

Marchan is hitting the injured list with left knee patellar tendinitis and will miss some time. With Stubbs also on the injured list, the Phillies needed to add another catcher to the MLB roster.

They decided to go with Henry, the 29-year-old right-handed hitting veteran catcher who's spent time with the Marlins and Yankees in his professional career.

In 43 at-bats for the Marlins in the Majors in 2021 and 2022, his last big-league experience, Henry hit .186 with a .523 OPS with four hits, one double, four RBIs, and six walks.

He has been with the Phillies in Triple-A this season for just seven games and 27 at-bats, where he hit .074 with a .148 OPS. In his previous stint with the Triple-A affiliate of the Yankees, he posted a .647 OPS in 152 at-bats.

During his minor league career, Henry has had a .724 OPS with a .249 batting average and 67 home runs.

He's not likely to see a lot of playing time, but the Phillies need a backup catcher, and Henry will be just that for the Phillies until Stubbs or Marchan returns from the IL.
