Phillies fans will love Dave Dombrowski's prediction on 2025 first-round pick Gage Wood

The Philadelphia Phillies haven't had the best of luck with their first-round draft picks in recent years. But the Aidan Miller selection looks to be working great, as he might reach the Majors soon.

Last year, the Phillies took Gage Wood in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft. The 22-year-old pitcher out of Arkansas threw a 19-strikeout no-hitter in the College Baseball playoffs. He's a big-game pitcher and an exciting prospect.

Heading into his first full season with the Phillies organization, Dave Dombrowski, as Cody Nidoh of Philly Sports Network shares, had a very exciting prediction for Wood.

Dave Dombrowski shares exciting Gage Wood thoughts

"Dave Dombrowski said he thinks Gage Wood can move 'very fast,'" Nidoh shares. "Plans are to make him a starting pitcher. Mentioned they have to be mindful of his innings, but for his development and for the organization, it will be a good thing in the long run."

Dombrowski is predicting that Wood can ascend the Phillies farm system "very fast" this upcoming season. A strong 2026, and Wood might be on the cusp of an MLB stint soon.

The Phillies could've made Wood a reliever and have him work his way up to the Major Leagues in such a role. But Dombrowski's plan is for Wood to be a starter, and with such a plan, he believes Wood can rise through the Phillies' farm system quickly.

He has already made his organizational debut, pitching in just one game and throwing two innings during the tail-end of the 2025 season.

For the Clearwater Threshers, Wood went two innings, allowing one hit and one run with two walks and five strikeouts. Only one of his outs wasn't a strikeout in his debut.

He has a long way to go to make the Major League roster, but Wood, the 2025 first-round pick selected 26th overall, has the belief of Dombrowski that he will rise through the organization quickly.

He's 22 years old and has been an impressive pitcher at times during his collegiate career. The incredible 19-strikeout no-hitter is the standout feat, but doing that in the minors, let alone the Majors, will be a lot more difficult.

Wood has plenty of potential, and Dombrowski's prediction should get Phillies fans excited to see what the most recent Phillies first-round pick can do in the minor leagues this year, as his ascension to the Majors might not take long.
