Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Rams playoff game to feature ‘measurable snow’

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to get some true home-field advantage for Sunday’s Divisional Round playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Forecasters have been tracking a winter storm that’s expected to bring precipitation and arctic temperatures to the interior Northeast over the weekend, and Sue Serio of FOX 29 Philadelphia reported Friday that she expects ‘measurable snowfall’ to hit Lincoln Financial Field and the greater Philly area on Sunday afternoon.

“It looks like it will be kind of slippey, slidey during the game, which starts at 3 o’clock (local time) and the snow is here," she said. "It’s rain down the shore and down in southern Delaware, but then the snow takes over with colder temperatures moving in. By 5 o’clock, everyone’s seeing snow, and the highest totals may be north and west of the city with this storm.”

How much snow is Philadelphia expected to get on Sunday?

Serio is expecting anywhere from 2 to 7 inches of snowfall in Philly on Sunday, which should be enough to not only enhance the viewing experience for fans, but the Eagles’ advantage as home favorites in the game. A thick coating of snow should turn the game into a mess, and that will favor a Philadelphia team that led the NFL in rushing attempts this season.

Some other stats and trends working in Philly’s favor with a snow game on tap: Dome teams are just 1-6 all-time in the playoffs when traveling to Philadelphia. As for the Rams, their elite passing attack is a different animal in weather games: QB Matthew Stafford is 1-8 in his career when playing outdoors in rain or snow.

No matter how you slice it, snow favors Philly’s power rushing attack led by Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts and the best offensive line in football. When you factor in the weather, an already tall task for the Rams is about to get even tougher.

When was the last Eagles 'Snow Bowl' played?

The Eagles have played in some epic weather games over the year — and Stafford was involved in one of them.

In Week 14 of the 2013 regular season, the Eagles hosted Stafford and the Detroit Lions and a game now known as the Snow Bowl. Running back LeSean McCoy rushed for a then-franchise record 217 yards, including long TD runs of 57 and 40 yards in Philly's 34-20 win.

Snow began falling two hours before kickoff and only intensified during the game. Conditions were so poor that neither team attempted a field goal, and there were two-point conversion attempts after seven of the eight touchdowns scored.

Stafford completed just 10 of his 25 passes in that game, and Eagles fans will be rooting for a similar stat line this Sunday night.
