In the midst of what was a lackluster performance for the Las Vegas Raiders overall in the preseason debut on Thursday night, rookie quarterback Cam Miller managed to stand out with his impressive showing.
Miller completed 6-of-7 passes for 76 yards and one touchdown in his first NFL action and looked very poised in the process.
The performance was highlighted by a 41-yard bomb to Shedrick Jackson on his very first drive that was set up by a perfect pump fake, and then after helping the Raiders to more points on his second drive, Miller put the Raiders in position to win the game late before a Daniel Carlson field goal was blocked.
On the failed final drive of the game, Miller had another highlight play when he rolled out and fired a strike to Jackson along the sideline to give Las Vegas an opportunity at the last-second field goal.
Raiders fans were left very impressed with Miller, and so much so that they are ready to crown him the QB2 over Aidan O'Connell, who struggled.
After the game, head coach Pete Carroll was impressed with what he saw from the rookie signal-caller against his former team.
"We knew that he would get the chance in the fourth quarter to do this and he did a terrific job. I'm so proud of him for hanging in there through all those situations," Carroll said of Miller. "Really, credit to him and the guys that made the catches."
Miller flew under the radar going into the draft, but he was very much on the radar of Raiders minority owner and future Hall of Famer, Tom Brady, who was reportedly "on board" with the selection.
"If it is true, that's very humbling and honoring to know the best quarterback to ever play the game endorsed me," Miller said before his preseason debut, according to Nick Walters of KTNV.
While it's far too early to say Miller is going to amount to anything in the NFL, let alone unseat O'Connell as the QB2, he definitely took steps in that direction in his outstanding debut in preseason Week 1.
