Patriots rumor sets New England up perfectly for blockbuster trade with Eagles

It’s challenging to envision trade rumors surrounding the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles dying down anytime soon.

The Patriots shouldn’t feel comfortable entering a new season without a multi-dimensional No. 1 wide receiver. Luckily for the six-time Super Bowl champions, the Eagles have exactly what they need, but will a deal ever materialize?

MassLive’s Karen Guregian certainly believes so.

“In short, the Patriots and Eagles are engaged in a staring contest,” Guregian wrote last Thursday. “While the expectation is they’ll eventually come to terms on a deal (involving A.J. Brown), whether it’s in the coming weeks, or after June 1, which is preferred by the Eagles for monetary reasons, it’s also possible another team will swoop in.”

Guregian’s report is the best-case scenario for the Patriots. The Athletic's Dianna Russini recently made it clear that the Eagles aren’t trading Brown right now, but insisted that a deal could come to fruition later on.

If it’s true that the consensus is the Patriots and Eagles will soon agree on a trade centered on Brown, New England will give Drake Maye with a top-tier wideout in Year 3 who’s a cheat code from a vertical threat/jump ball standpoint.

Brown finished his seventh NFL season with 78 receptions for 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on an Eagles squad that failed to advance past the NFC Wild Card round.

It seems as though the Patriots are the front-runners to land Brown at this stage of the offseason.
