Patriots linked to disgruntled 49ers WR for horrible trade idea after AJ Brown injury

The New England Patriots not only lost their Week 1 matchup to the Seattle Seahawks, but they also saw A.J. Brown go down with an injury that'll likely force him to miss a lot of time.

He'll miss at least the next four weeks, and potentially even more as well. New England is going to need a bit more receiver help, especially since Kayshon Boutte was traded to the Houston Texans. Romeo Doubs, Demario Douglas, Mack Hollins, and Kyle Williams are not a good enough group. Some insurance couldn't hurt.

That's why Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox named the Patriots as a potential landing spot for disgruntled San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk in a trade. This idea from Knox would be a horrible one for the Patriots for so many reasons.

Patriots linked to horrible Brandon Aiyuk trade idea

"Although Aiyuk hasn't played since suffering a significant knee injury in 2024, he is still only 28 and surpassed 1,300 receiving yards when he was last healthy in 2023," Knox writes. "... Potential suitors: Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots."

The 49ers are surely still hoping that some team comes along and makes a trade offer for Aiyuk. No team should make an offer, let alone have interest in him going forward.

He left the 49ers behind and has been an off-field nightmare for the 49ers. Why would the Patriots, even with a huge need at WR, ever consider trading for Aiyuk?

Even if the 49ers were to give the Patriots a draft pick, Aiyuk would do more harm than good on the Patriots roster. Brown isn't going to miss the entire season, and the current receiver options aren't so terrible that the Patriots are this desperate.

While Knox isn't making the case for the Patriots, or any team, to trade for Aiyuk, there is no scenario in which the Patriots should even have a passing interest in the 49ers WR.

This kind of trade would make things worse for New England. Doubs, Hollins, Douglas, and Williams are a decent enough WR room for the Patriots to move forward without considering Aiyuk.

Maybe if some other intriguing WR, like Hollywood Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles, or Marvin Harrison Jr. from the Arizona Cardinals, were to become available, then a trade would make a bit more sense.

But no matter what the Patriots do, Aiyuk should not be anywhere close to being part of their plans. Adding him in any capacity would be a horrible idea, especially in the middle of the season.
