The Buffalo Bills didn't need much time Thursday night to remind the rest of the NFL why they remain one of the league's most dangerous teams. Buffalo defeated the Detroit Lions 41-31 on "Thursday Night Football," improving to 2-0 and handing Detroit its first loss of the 2026 season.
Josh Allen was once again at the center of everything.
The Bills quarterback completed 23 of 32 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 44 yards on the ground. Buffalo built a 24-7 halftime advantage and never allowed Detroit to completely erase it.
Afterward, Allen wasn't particularly interested in making the victory about himself. He focused on what Buffalo showed as a team.
"That's a really good football team we just played," Allen said during his postgame interview. "We knew it was going to take everybody."
That might sound like standard quarterback language. Thursday's game showed exactly why it mattered.

Allen didn't have to rescue Buffalo from disaster. He controlled the game because the Bills gave him multiple ways to attack.

Allen spread the football around instead of relying on one receiver to carry the passing game. That balance became particularly important because Detroit entered the game with an offense capable of erasing deficits quickly.
The Lions had scored 31 points in their Week 1 victory over New Orleans, with Jahmyr Gibbs rushing for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Buffalo never gave Gibbs a realistic opportunity to dictate Thursday's game in the same fashion.
Instead, Detroit spent much of the night chasing the Bills.
Allen was a major reason why. He repeatedly extended possessions with his legs, attacked Detroit downfield when opportunities appeared and avoided the type of costly mistakes that can turn a comfortable lead into a close game. The performance followed another impressive outing in Buffalo's season opener.
Allen threw for 334 yards as the Bills defeated the Houston Texans 36-31 in Week 1. Through two games, Buffalo's offense has scored 70 points.
That's a fairly convincing opening statement.

Bills already look like an AFC problem
It's obviously too early to make sweeping conclusions about any NFL team. Two games represent only a small fraction of the regular season. Buffalo's first two victories are still difficult to ignore.
The Bills opened by winning a high-scoring road game against Houston.
Four days later, they beat a Detroit team that entered the season with legitimate NFC championship expectations. And they did it while playing on a short week.
Allen remains the biggest reason Buffalo's ceiling is so high. When he protects the football and takes what defenses give him, there aren't many obvious answers for defending the Bills.
Take away the deep ball and Allen can work underneath. Play softer coverage and Buffalo can run the football. Lose contain and Allen can create with his legs.
Detroit experienced all three problems Thursday. The Lions will have time to correct what went wrong.
Buffalo has a different challenge. The Bills now have to handle the expectations created by a 2-0 start in which their offense has already shown it can win games in multiple ways.
Allen's postgame message suggested Buffalo understands that. Thursday wasn't a championship. It wasn't a playoff victory. It was one impressive win over a talented opponent in September.
For a Bills team with much bigger goals, that's exactly how they want to treat it.
