The New England Patriots came painfully close to completing one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in NFL history. Their future may be even more promising than their surprising run to the Super Bowl suggested.
ESPN’s Aaron Schatz ranked every NFL team based on its collection of players under 25 years old entering the 2026 season. New England claimed the No. 1 position, moving ahead of a Houston Texans organization that had occupied the top spot for three consecutive years.
The rankings considered much more than the number of young players on each roster. Starts, total snaps, performance, positional value, contract length, draft capital and projected 2026 roles were all included.
New England’s rise from seventh last year to first this year is another indication that its championship window may remain open for a long time.

Drake Maye makes Patriots’ future look different
The conversation naturally begins with Drake Maye. Schatz identified Maye as the NFL’s most valuable young asset after the quarterback passed for 4,394 yards and nearly captured the MVP award in 2025. He will turn 24 shortly before the regular season begins.
That combination of youth, production and positional importance gives New England something every organization covets. The Patriots have a proven franchise quarterback who remains on his rookie contract. Maye’s presence helped New England reach the Super Bowl last season. It also gives the front office flexibility to continue building around him before a massive second contract changes the team’s salary-cap structure.
The Patriots have already invested heavily in protecting their quarterback.
Left tackle Will Campbell is only 22, while starting center Jared Wilson is 23. First-round pick Caleb Lomu is 21 and could eventually start at either tackle position. That offensive line struggled at times during the postseason, but its youth means the group should still have plenty of room to develop.
New England has surrounded Maye with young playmakers
The Patriots’ under-25 talent extends beyond the quarterback and offensive line. Running back TreVeyon Henderson is 23. Wide receivers Kayshon Boutte and Kyle Williams are 24 and 23, respectively, while rookie tight end Eli Raridon is only 22.
Not every player will become a star, but New England has assembled multiple young options at important offensive positions. The organization does not need every prospect to hit for the plan to work.
The defense also features one of the league’s best young cornerbacks.
Christian Gonzalez earned a Pro Bowl selection after recording 69 tackles and 20 passes defensed in 2025. He turned 24 in June and was one of three Patriots identified by ESPN as blue-chip players, joining Maye and Campbell. Defensive tackle Joshua Farmer is 23, while rookie edge rusher Gabe Jacas is 22.
Patriots have built a sustainable contender
Youth does not guarantee success. A roster can be inexperienced without being talented. The Patriots are different because their best young players have already contributed to winning football. Maye has established himself as one of the league’s leading quarterbacks. Gonzalez is a Pro Bowl defender. Campbell has become an important part of the offensive line.
New England also has young depth at running back, receiver, tight end and along both lines. Some teams spend years searching for a quarterback before they can begin building a contender. The Patriots have already completed the most difficult part.
Their Super Bowl appearance showed what the roster can accomplish now. ESPN’s ranking suggests New England may be positioned to compete for much more than one season.
