Patriots' Drake Maye injury news just got worse as Super Bowl approaches

1 hour ago 4

There's still a lot of time until the Super Bowl. The New England Patriots won't take on the Seattle Seahawks in the big game until a week from Sunday.

But it's never good for a quarterback to be missing from practice for any kind of injury reason, and that's what happened with Drake Maye on Friday.

The Patriots listed Maye as a did not participate on the practice report.

He added an illness on the report to the right shoulder injury he was already known to be dealing with.

Maye and head coach Mike Vrabel have both downplayed the shoulder injury this week, and probably for good reason. It doesn't do them any good to express concern, and it's a long way until the game.

Before Friday, Maye had been listed as a limited practice participant, so the first implication here is that the illness may have been the reason he sat out practice entirely.

On the one hand, much better for Maye to get sick now than in a week or so.

On the other, it's not ideal for any kind of doubt or anxiety to enter into the Pats' minds as they approach the biggest game of most of their lives.

Maye's backup is Joshua Dobbs, a proven veteran but not one New England would ever picture starting for them in the Super Bowl.

Behind Dobbs on the depth chart is Tommy DeVito, the former New York Giants fan favorite.

The Patriots will be hoping that Dobbs and DeVito remain QB2 and QB3 a week from Sunday.
