Patrick Mahomes offers ideal injury update for Chiefs fans

1 hour ago 3

All eyes were on Patrick Mahomes as the Kansas City Chiefs began OTAs this week with the star quarterback on the comeback trail from a torn ACL.

We have seen Patrick slowly progress this offseason, but this was the first opportunity to see him in team drills, albeit in a limited capacity, as fans and media got a good look at how No.15 is traveling in his attempts to play Week 1.

That has always been the goal, but as we know, recovery from a serious injury isn't always straightforward.

But as Mahomes finished up another day of practice, he gave an update on his recovery.

"I want to play," Mahomes said via NFL.com. "I don't want to miss games as much as possible. I know it's not all my control. It's in God's control at some point, but I'm going to give myself a chance by the way I work to be the best I can be.

"I'm in a good spot now compared to where some people thought, but I thought I was going to be here. It's just doing what I'm supposed to do every single day, and hopefully that gives me a chance to be out there with the guys whenever we start the season."

Can Mahomes maintain the rage?

That will be the hope, and you can bet your house the Chiefs will play the slow game with Patrick.

Ticking off checkpoints, as Patrick says in his recovery, is the way to go right now, and while there are fans who ideally want Mahomes to be on the field in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, Patrick's long-term health is far more important than pushing hard for a Week 1 start.

How the next couple of months go will be crucial in determining how much Kansas City pushes for that Week 1 start for Patrick, but I'd imagine the franchise will take the cautious approach.

Given how crucial Mahomes is to the entire operation, slow and steady might win this race.
