Michigan State does not have many comfortable Saturdays waiting on the 2026 schedule. In Pat Fitzgerald’s first season in East Lansing, wins will be difficult to find, momentum will be fragile and every winnable Big Ten game will carry serious postseason weight.
That is what makes Michigan State’s meeting with Northwestern so important. The Spartans are not expected to immediately surge back into Big Ten relevance under Fitzgerald, but this is the type of game that can separate a slow rebuild from a lost season.
CBS Sports college football analyst Brad Crawford sees it as the Spartans’ biggest trap-game spot because the opponent is comparable, the stakes are real, and the loser could quickly see its postseason hopes vanish.
“Wins will come at a premium for the Spartans this season, so Michigan State needs its best execution in contests where rosters are at least comparable,” Crawford wrote.
That is the blunt reality for Michigan State. This is not Ohio State, Oregon or Michigan, where the Spartans may need something close to chaos to win. Northwestern is the kind of opponent Michigan State must beat if Fitzgerald’s first season is going to show meaningful progress.
The pressure could be amplified by the standings. If Michigan State starts slowly in conference play, this matchup could arrive with the Spartans already fighting to keep the season from slipping away.

“There’s a chance Pat Fitzgerald could be facing an 0-4 hole to start Big Ten play at his new program unless returning Michigan State quarterback Alessio Milivojevic finds an early rhythm prior to this one against the Wildcats,” Crawford wrote.
That puts plenty of weight on Milivojevic. If he settles in early, Michigan State can at least build enough offensive firepower to win the toss-up games. If he struggles, even matchups against comparable rosters become uncomfortable.
Northwestern will not need to dominate to make this dangerous. The Wildcats simply have to drag Michigan State into a tight, uncomfortable game and force the Spartans to execute late. For a program still building confidence, that can be a difficult ask.
That makes the emotional side of the game just as important as the matchup itself. Michigan State cannot afford to treat Northwestern like a soft spot on the schedule. In a transition season, confidence is earned through games exactly like this one.

“The loser of this game is essentially grasping at straws in the postseason picture and could be looking down the barrel of a disappointing campaign,” Crawford wrote.
For Michigan State, that is why this game matters so much. It is not glamorous, but it may reveal whether Fitzgerald’s first team can actually stack wins or merely compete hard while falling short.
