The official images from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey have been released, prompting a wide range of reactions across social media. While anticipation remains high for the large-scale adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, some viewers have raised concerns about historical accuracy, particularly regarding costume design.
The movie will hit the theatres on July 17, 2026. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland portraying key figures from the ancient Greek narrative.
The exclusive images, shared by Entertainment Weekly, provided an early glimpse of several characters. Damon’s Odysseus and Pattinson’s Antinous drew attention for their dramatic presentations, while images of Hathaway as Penelope and Holland as Telemachus sparked online discussion due to their wardrobe choices.
Shortly after the images were shared, comments began circulating on X questioning the use of trousers for characters set in ancient Greece. Some users noted that pants were historically associated with non-Greek cultures during the period in which The Odyssey is traditionally set. One widely shared post summarized the reaction:

Historians who love old books say that Greeks wore loose clothes, such as chitons or peplos, which were flowing pieces wrapped around the body. Old records often associate pants with outsiders, not Greeks, which created a clear cultural divide between them.

The pictures sparked talk about what Penelope and Telemachus actually do in the tale. While Odysseus is away confronting dangerous and unpredictable trials, these two remain in Ithaca, navigating uneasy power dynamics and fractured personal bonds at home.

Inspired by Homer’s old Greek story, it tracks Odysseus, ruler of Ithaca, battling challenges while trekking home after Troy’s collapse. With a zeal for getting back to his wife, he batted hurdles along the way.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, and Tom Holland portrays their son, Telemachus. Zendaya jumps in as Athena, the divine one. Lupita Nyong’o pops up at crucial points, though Robert Pattinson becomes Antinous. Charlize Theron plays Circe, bringing depth without slowing things down. Jon Bernthal takes on the role of Menelaus; John Leguizamo moves through scenes alongside Himesh Patel and Mia Goth.
The project is driven by Nolan, along with Emma Thomas, via their firm Syncopy. Shooting commenced in early 2025, following Universal Pictures' involvement in the project. Filming commenced in February 2025 and concluded by August. Locations popped up across North Africa and parts of Europe. First came Morocco, then Greece rolled into view, with Italy close behind.
After that, crews moved north to Scotland, swung by icy Iceland, and then ended in the dry stretches of Western Sahara.
Meanwhile, The Odyssey continues to capture attention online. For now, Universal Pictures hasn’t said a word about fan reactions to the costumes.
