Paige Bueckers credits teammates after making WNBA history in Wings' overtime win

1 hour ago 3

Paige Bueckers added another milestone to her already remarkable young WNBA career on Wednesday night, but if you ask the Dallas Wings star, the achievement belongs to far more than just her. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year continued her sensational start to her second professional season by helping lead Dallas to a thrilling 112-110 overtime victory over the Seattle Storm. Bueckers finished with 27 points, five rebounds and five assists, but it was one of those assists that helped her rewrite the league's record book.

With the performance, Bueckers became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 1,000 career points and 250 assists, another impressive accomplishment for the former UConn standout. Instead of celebrating herself after the game, however, Bueckers immediately turned the attention toward the people around her.

Paige Bueckers gives teammates the credit

Speaking with ESPN after the game, Bueckers reflected on the milestone and made it clear she doesn't view it as an individual accomplishment.

"It's meant everything," Bueckers said. "I think it's more a testament to who's helped me get here, the village that helped me get here, the story, the adversity that a lot of people helped me overcome."

She then explained why the assists portion of the record is impossible to achieve without the players around her.

"Obviously, when you talk about assists," Bueckers said, "that means a whole lot of teammates are involved. And even buckets, a whole lot of teammates are involved. And coaching staffs are involved. A whole lot of people that are important to me."

Bueckers finished by thanking everyone who has played a role in her development.

"It's really rewarding to see that hard work pay off," she said. "And their hard work and their investment and their belief in me pay off.

"But it's really a true team testament and a team accomplishment, and so I'm really grateful for it."

Bueckers continues to lead Dallas' rise

Individual accolades have followed Bueckers since she entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. She earned All-Star honors, made the All-WNBA Second Team and captured Rookie of the Year after averaging 19.2 points, 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals during her debut season.

This season, she's helped elevate the Wings into the playoff picture once again. Dallas improved to 11-6 with Wednesday's overtime victory, moving into fifth place in the WNBA standings while continuing to establish itself as one of the league's biggest contenders.

If Bueckers keeps producing at this pace, more records are almost certainly on the horizon. But based on her comments after making history, don't expect her to spend much time talking about them. She'd rather share the spotlight with the teammates and coaches who helped her get there.
