Yankees linked to trade deadline reunion with Mets' $22 million reliever

The New York Yankees will be one of the several contending clubs searching for bullpen upgrades at the trade deadline.

Last summer, the Yankees acquired three relievers (David Bednar, Camilo Doval, Jake Bird).

Bird is back in Triple-A after a rough few outings, and Doval is getting hit hard despite possessing nasty stuff on the mound.

Bednar has been shaky, but has not allowed a run in over a month, writes Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller

Still, the Yankees could opt to find another reliable closer. Could they turn to the struggling New York Mets to negotiate a trade for a former fan favorite?

"Luke Weaver has gone 20 scoreless innings since the beginning of May, emerging as the best reliever on a Mets team going nowhere fast," Miller wrote. "He is three months into a two-year, $22M deal, but that shouldn't be an issue for the deep-pocketed Yankees."

A Weaver reunion with the Yankees couldn't be the only bullpen move the Yankees make, but it would help them mitigate a glaring issue ahead of the postseason.

Weaver often closed games for the Yankees during their run to the 2024 World Series and became a great underdog story once pitching coach Matt Blake got to work with the right-hander.

Obviously, Weaver would be comfortable in the clubhouse, having been teammates with more than a handful of the Yankees' current roster.

If the Yankees prefer to keep Bednar in the closer's role, the 32-year-old can assume the eighth inning gig.
