The San Diego Padres kicked off a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies in Denver on Friday night. The first pitch was set for 6:50 pm MT with the game being played at Coors Field.
However, in a weird twist, the Padres announced a trade just 10 minutes after the game started.
The trade was utilityman Conner Joe going to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Andrew Moore.
We have acquired RHP Andrew Moore and cash considerations from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for INF/OF Connor Joe.
— San Diego Padres (@Padres) May 10, 2025Joe signed with the Padres in the offseason and played in just a handful of games and going hitless in nine at-bats.
But, what makes an in-game trade even more strange is the fact that Joe was traded away while facing his former team.
Joe spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but prior to that, he played the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Rockies. Joe spent most of this season with San Diego's Triple-A club in El Paso, so it's not a big loss for the Padres but just a weird scenario.
Moore is a Double-A reliever for the Reds who has a 4.15 ERA in just a handful of appearances, so presumably this feels like a move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
So, Connor Joe's Padres tenure came to an end while San Diego faced off against the Rockies in Colorado.
