Padres sign 8-year MLB reliever who most recently played for Mets

The San Diego Padres have added organizational bullpen depth as they push toward the postseason. 

On Tuesday, the NL West club signed a right-handed reliever with eight years of MLB experience. 

According to the MLB transaction log, Trevor Gott has signed a minor league deal with the Padres. 

Gott, 34, last pitched in the Majors with the Seattle Mariners and New York Mets in 2023. That season, he struck out 30 batters and posted a 4.34 ERA in 29 innings. 

Gott will take one of the Triple-A roster spots that belonged to right-handers J.P. France and Jose Leclerc, who were both released from the organization on Monday.

In 26 appearances at Triple-A Rochester in the Washington Nationals system this year, Gott posted a respectable 3.55 ERA. 

"Once upon a time, Gott was a serviceable big league pitcher, posting a 4.65 ERA in 243 2/3 innings spread across eight seasons. But he had mostly been injured and/or ineffective for the better part of three years now," Charlie Wright and Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "The Padres will add him as veteran non-roster depth, but he won’t be eligible for the postseason since this deal was signed after September 1." 

Unfortunately, Gott will not be eligible for the postseason, but he could help San Diego's bullpen over the course of the final few weeks of the regular season.
