Padres release former Astros pitcher with 4.49 career ERA

The San Diego Padres have released a four-year Major League pitcher. 

The right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Padres in August after his release from the Houston Astros. 

According to the MiLB transaction log, the Padres cut ties with J.P. France. 

The 31-year-old threw 10.2 innings at Triple-A El Paso, but he allowed 10 earned runs on 19 hits with eight walks and nine strikeouts. 

"The Padres were in need of more pitching depth at the time of his signing but followed with deadline-day acquisitions of veteran starters Robbie Ray and Casey Mize," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.

"The Padres also welcomed Nick Pivetta back from the injured list this weekend, further strengthening their staff."

France's best year of his career was his rookie season with the Astros in 2023. He posted a 3.83 ERA with an 11-6 record, making 24 appearances, including 23 starts. 

In 2024, France underwent surgery to repair a capsule tear in his shoulder. He's made just 10 appearances in the Majors since the beginning of the 2024 season. 

The Padres have also released right-handed reliever Jose Leclerc from his minor league deal.
