Spring Training is here, and the San Diego Padres have made some moves to replace Dylan Cease in their starting rotation, but none of them are a proven answer. However, there is one pitcher left on the market that could definitely give them the depth they want.
Fansided’s Zachary Rotman predicts the Padres are likely to sign Zack Littell, a veteran starting pitcher who had a pretty good year last year as an end-of-rotation pitcher. He isn’t a flamethrower, but he gets the job done, and that’s what the Padres want.
“As mentioned above, the Padres need to add starting pitching, and while Scherzer has the best resume of the available free agents and Giolito is the biggest name, Littell might project the best for 2026. He won't blow anyone away, but he's posted a 3.73 ERA in 61 starts over the past two seasons. That'll play on a Padres team that could use a reliable innings eater,” Rotman wrote.
This past season, Littell posted a 10-8 record, a 3.81 ERA, 130 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.104 over 186 innings pitched. He wins more often than not, he eats innings, and he has a relatively good K-rate and WHIP for a back end reliever.
Littell is projected to receive a three-year, $39 million deal. However, with Spring Training underway, the Padres could get him for less. However, if they want to give him the deal, it would also be worth it for them.
Hopefully, the Padres realize what a good fit this could be, and get Littell on their roster ASAP.
