Darryn Peterson is facing renewed criticism after a viral image showed him standing away from the huddle during Kansas’ 84-68 loss Saturday. Unfortunately, for the projected top pick, it was a moment that quickly ignited debate across social media and among NBA evaluators.
The image is the latest in the conversation around Peterson's ability to adapt for the next level. He finished with 17 points in 33 minutes in the loss, but concerns about durability and engagement have followed the freshman star throughout the season. With the 2026 NBA Draft approaching, questions about finishing games and staying on the floor are becoming part of the scouting report.
The say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Well, this one is going to spark some debate in the coming days.

— Burch (@braden_burcham_) February 21, 2026Kansas coach Bill Self addressed the growing criticism this week and offered a direct response.
“He hasn’t finished games,” Self said. “The bottom line is, there is a way to change the narrative: Play. Finish. That’s the way to get people to quit talking.”
The issue resurfaced after No. 8 Kansas defeated Oklahoma State 81-69. Peterson scored 20 of his 23 points in the first half, shooting 6-for-10 from 3-point range. But shortly after knocking down a three-pointer early in the second half, he asked Self to come out and did not return, sitting the final 17 minutes.

Peterson has appeared in 16 of 27 games this season, missing time with a hamstring injury, cramping and illness. He is averaging 20 points in 28.5 minutes while shooting 48.5% from the field and 43.1% from 3-point range.
With the Big 12 Conference and NCAA tournaments approaching, talent is not the concern. But also the NBA scouts are watching closely. It's moments like these that may ultimately shape Peterson’s draft narrative.
