Padres ownership open to investing in team at MLB trade deadline

The San Diego Padres, under the late Peter Seidler, were always one of the most aggressive teams at the MLB trade deadline. Now, under new ownership, there are questions about how much they are willing to invest in the team.

Their plans were unknown, at least until a recent article from Dennis Lin in The Athletic revealed how Seidler will approach the trade deadline. Padres general manager A.J. Preller revealed in Lin's piece how he sees the Padres' ownership approaching the deadline, and what Seidler is willing to do to invest in the team.

"And this year," Preller said. "with John Seidler (as Padres chairman), I think it's been very similar conversations ... open to going any direction but understanding that if we have a chance to win, we're going to do everything we can to win a championship here in San Diego."

While it's staying in the family, there was reasonable concern over how the Padres would approach the trade deadline and spending on the team. Previously, the Padres were spending with near reckless abandon, and while it resulted in a lot of fun seasons, the future of the team's spending was uncertain.

But these comments from Preller not only clear the air, but also reveal that the Padres, under John Seidler, are ready to invest in the team if things look positive. While Preller also opened the door to selling, these comments are an indication that if the team is in good shape, they'll be ready to buy at the trade deadline.

Having an owner ready to invest in the team and try to win a World Series is what brought the Padres back from the bottom of the NL that they were stuck in during rhe 2010s.

Hearing Preller's comments on John Siedler is a massive boost of confidence that not only will the Padres make the right decision, but they won't be afraid to spend at the trade deadline if deemed necessary to win a World Series.

Many owners around baseball sit on their hands at the trade deadline, but the Padres weren't one of those teams under Peter Seidler. Now, with John Seidler at the helm, while not likely to be nearly as aggressive, he's ready to invest in the team. If the Padres are in solid shape at the deadline, Preller and Seidler might be one of the most aggressive teams at the deadline.
