The San Diego Padres are heading into the 2026-2027 MLB offseason with plenty of questions they'll need to answer. Mason Miller is locked in, but Adrian Morejon, their No. 2 reliever, is a free agent.

But they might have bigger fish to fry with their starting rotation. Michael King is likely to opt out and hit free agency, while multiple others are also set to hit the open market. So, adding a starter this Winter would make a lot of sense.

Will that starter be Tarik Skubal? Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller predicted the Padres would be the winners of the Skubal sweepstakes in a "bold prediction." But considering their need and the fit, this would actually make perfect sense for the team and player.

Padres predicted to sign Tarik Skubal in deal that makes perfect sense

"NL West: San Diego Padres win Tarik Skubal sweepstakes," Miller predicts. This prediction is considered "bold," but it might actually be one of Skubal's most sensible landing spots.

While there's been a ton of links between Skubal and the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, or even a return to the Detroit Tigers, the Padres should be considered a real landing spot for the left-handed Cy Young winner.

Skubal is going to seek top dollar this offseason, and with a new ownership group in charge, what better way to introduce themselves to the Padres' faithful than by being willing to spend a fortune on Skubal?

That's the kind of move that could endear a fanbase to its ownership group, something not often seen in professional sports.

But add in that A.J. Preller is more than willing to make a surprising move, and the major need in the rotation, and Skubal actually makes perfect sense for the Padres.

It might cost a fortune, likely upwards of $300 million over an extended period of time, but if the Padres want to invest in this team, with the belief they are serious World Series contenders these next few years, a Skubal signing is a very sensible decision.
