Padres get bad news on potential trade for Red Sox outfielder

For the San Diego Padres, they have a clear need in left field at the trade deadline. While there are a few options on the market, the Padres got some bad news on one of, if not their top trade target, from the Boston Red Sox.

According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Padres are unlikely to land Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. The Padres were reportedly interested in the Red Sox outfielder, but after this report from Lin, it seems like a deal isn't very likely.

"Duran remains at or near the top of San Diego's list of trade targets," Lin writes. "But unless the Red Sox really fall out of their wild-card chase, they may not have much incentive to move him next month."

It's an obvious problem for the Padres and other teams interested in Duran. As of the beginning of July, the Red Sox are still within striking distance of an AL Wild Card spot. If the Red Sox stay in striking distance or move up and get a spot, a Duran trade isn't likely.

The Padres, with their clear need in left, would've been the perfect landing spot for Duran. He's an affordable contract and is under team control for the next three seasons. A.J. Preller and the Padres would love to land Duran, but the Red Sox aren't in a position to sell as of this moment.

Even if they were sellers, the Padres might not be able to land Duran, as there would be tough competition across baseball for the former 8.7 WAR outfielder. Duran hasn't been as great this season as he was last year, but the potential is off the charts for Duran.

If the Padres landed Duran, their outfield of Duran, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Jackson Merrill would be the best in the league. But, it's seeming more like a dream scenario than a realistic possibility.

Lin suggests that the Padres still have Duran high on their trade target list, but with the Red Sox in contention, a trade doesn't seem likely. San Diego will have to look elsewhere for a new left fielder, something that is expected to be solved by the MLB trade deadline.
