The San Diego Padres have a new ownership group, and this upcoming offseason, they're going to be tested right away with a few key names hitting the open market at the same time.
Adrian Morejon's free agency will be very interesting, especially with Mason Miller already anchoring the bullpen. But there's another pitcher set to hit the open market that's going to be a very interesting question for this Padres' front office.
Michael King, the Padres' postseason hero, is likely to opt out of his current deal and will likely land a massive contract this offseason. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter is predicting that King will land a massive $120 million deal this offseason.
Michael King predicted to land $120M contract
"Predicted contract: 5 years, $120 million," Reuter predicts. "Robbie Ray signed a five-year, $115 million deal following his Cy Young season in 2021. His earning power was somewhat limited by an inconsistent track record. With only two full seasons as a starter under his belt and injury issues in 2025, King has a comparable free agency outlook."
King landing a $120 million deal over five years would be a significant raise from his $75 million three-year contract he signed last offseason to return to the Padres.
While it comes out to $24 million per-year, $1 million less than the AAV of his current deal with the Padres, it features significantly more money overall and is a long-term contract for someone who's had a shaky past.

But if King can replicate what he did for the Padres in 2026, posting a 3.21 ERA with 159 strikeouts across 185 innings of work, on top of a strong postseason performance, then a long-term deal wouldn't be that shocking.
There's bound to be plenty of interested teams in King this offseason, especially since he's widely considered to be the second-best pitcher in this year's free agent class, with Tarik Skubal leading the pack.
The Padres could look to make a push for Skubal this offseason, but a long-term deal like the one Reuter is predicting for King would not be a bad fallback option at all.
King proved his potential this past season, and with there likely to be a lot of interest in his services this offseason, a $120 million deal for King would certainly be in play for the veteran right-hander.
