It's not easy being a rookie in the NFL. The lights get brighter, and the pressure is on to perform early on, or else teams might not take a chance on you. It's up to rookies to impress early and often, and that's what one Green Bay Packers player is doing during this preseason.
Sixth-round rookie Trey Smack is all the talk in the NFL right now. The youngster made two 58-yard field goals in the first week of the preseason, and even though one was wiped out by a defensive penalty, it was still impressive.
That's quite a showing for a sixth-rounder. It appears the Packers have found a diamond in the rough.
Now, CBS Sports has named Smack one of the biggest winners of the preseason, along with the entire Packers' special teams crew.
Trey Smack earns praise from Packers star
What's cool is that even Packers star Micah Parsons is recognizing Smack's talent, in the form of a shout-out on X.
"In Week 2 in Denver, he smacked, pun intended, a 51-yard kick, a 59-yard kick and a 43-yard kick through the uprights, the latter of which occurred as time expired in the first half," Garrett Podell and Zachary Pereles note in the piece. "Green Bay All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons, who is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in Denver last season, is fired up about Smack's performance from the couch."
Sure, Smack's position isn't a glamorous one, and he won't be getting the headlines of other big-named rookies in the league. But, the preseason has been a solid start for him.
