Packers projected $48 million standout playmaker predicted to leave Green Bay for 49ers

The Green Bay Packers are entering a pivotal 2026 offseason, and deciding the future of wide receiver Romeo Doubs will be just one of the many tough decisions they'll need to make.

Doubs will hit the free agency market, and though he's coming off a solid 2025 campaign, the Packers have a ton of young talent at receiver and could let him walk.

If Doubs doesn't return to Green Bay next year, Pro Football Focus' Nathan Jahnke predicts the 25-year-old playmaker will sign with the San Francisco 49ers.

Here is what Jahnke had to say about Doubs and his potential fit in San Francisco:

"The 49ers will need an X receiver next season if Jennings doesn’t re-sign. Jennings has spent most of the last two seasons as their X receiver, as Brandon Aiyuk played the X position before that. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spent most of 2008-2016 as an assistant under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan with three different franchises, so Doubs would be a strong schematic fit with the 49ers offense."

Receiver is about to be a major need for the 49ers, especially if Jauan Jennings departs in free agency. Brandon Aiyuk didn't play a snap this season, and general manager John Lynch has already said that Aiyuk will be elsewhere in 2026.

Signing Doubs would be a logical move for the 49ers. The Nevada product tallied a career high of 724 receiving yards in 2025 and has consistently been a top playmaker for the Packers.

Even if San Francisco is able to retain Jennings, adding Doubs to the receiver group still makes sense, as quarterback Brock Purdy needs as much talent around him as possible to succeed.

The 49ers are slated to have $23 million in cap space this offseason, and the front office can create even more cap room by restructuring contracts and making cuts.

Spotrac projects Doubs will land a $48 million contract over four years, which averages to $12 million annually. San Francusoc should be willing to pay that price to upgrade one of its most pressing needs.
