Packers predicted to cut ties with $9 million young playmaker with 16 TDs before season begins

The Packers have several questions surrounding their defensive line and are reportedly looking to add a veteran if possible. One potential option is veteran pass rusher Matthew Judon.

“Even though the Packers struck gold last season with Javon Bullard and Evan Williams, they cannot depend on Sorrell and Oliver to be instant contributors from Day 1. Therefore, it would be best for them to bring in a veteran before training camp begins later this month, as they still don’t know what former first-round pick Lukas Van Ness is,” Dairyland Express’ Jovan Alford wrote. “Given the current talent in the edge department, there's nothing to lose by bringing in Judon. If he’s motivated and looking to prove that last year wasn’t his best, the Packers could end up getting a steal.”

While the defensive line is a clear area of concern, the Packers’ wide receiver room could also face some difficult decisions—this time, in the form of subtraction. First-round pick Matthew Golden has already made a bold impression and appears to be the only lock to stay.

“Definitely want to go get that [Lombardi] trophy, man,” Golden told KPRC’s Aaron Wilson. “That’s the question mark we got in our team room is just filling in that blank. That’s the last thing we need in that team room and, for us, that’s all we talk about at practice is getting that trophy.”

It seems like the two receivers most at risk are Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. Pro Football Network’s Jacob Infante believes the Packers may straight-up cut Watson.

“Watson doesn’t have the special-teams value that Mecole Hardman, Bo Melton and Malik Heath all have. Both Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks have done a better job of staying healthy, and Jayden Reed and the two rookies are locks to make the team,” Infante wrote.

The harsh reality is that Watson is coming off an ACL injury. And while he looks good physically, there’s no guarantee he’ll be the same player on the field. This opens the door for the Packers to release him outright, something they’ve shown they’re not afraid to do with talent.
