Orioles trade proposal lands former $56 million Cy Young, sends six-year veteran starter and slugging corner infielder to Marlins

The Baltimore Orioles already have a surplus of starting pitchers and not enough spots for everyone. 

This offseason, they swung a trade for Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays and signed veterans Chris Bassitt and Zach Eflin to free agent contracts. 

They are hoping for full, healthy seasons from their top two starters, Trevor Rogers and Kyle Bradish. The latter has made just 14 combined starts the past two seasons after undergoing Tommy John Surgery two summers ago. 

Additional moves can still be made before Opening Day, however, and Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer thinks Mike Elias, Baltimore's president of baseball operations, should give the Miami Marlins a call. 

Trade idea sends RHP Dean Kremer and 3B/1B Coby Mayo to Marlins 

Former NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara's name has appeared in trade rumors the past few seasons, but the Marlins have resisted shipping him away. 

That could change if the Orioles dangle a veteran starter and a former power-hitting prospect in trade talks. 

"Even if he has yet to break out in the majors, [Coby] Mayo could still have enough value to get Miami to finally relent," wrote Rymer. "He was ranked as MLB Pipeline's No. 14 prospect this time last year, which was on the heels of back-to-back seasons with an OPS over .900 in the high minors." 

For the Orioles, acquiring a front-line starter with one year remaining on his contract is something they've done recently, swinging a trade for Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers ahead of the 2024 season. 

Alcantara had a poor 5.36 ERA in 31 starts last season and comes with injury risk, but looked more like his old self during the later months of 2025, striking out 38 batters while holding opponents to a .204 average in six starts in August.
