Orioles trade idea lands $56 million two-time All-Star from Marlins

The Baltimore Orioles are not off to a good start in 2025. They are 12-18 and sit in last place in the American League East.

They need help on the pitching side after losing Corbin Burnes to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Grayson Rodriguez also began the season on the injured list and Charlie Morton hasn't panned out.

If they fight their way back into the mix, they'll need to add a top-level pitcher.

Zachary Howell of Clutch Points proposed the idea of them pursuing Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara.

"Alcantara won a Cy Young award in 2022 and is among the leaders in innings pitched in Major League Baseball when he is healthy. He is having a rough start to his 2025 season after missing last year while recovering from UCL injury. Despite not having the same fear factor he wielded before his surgery, Alcantara can still spin it with the best pitchers in the game," Howell writes.

The former Cy Young and two-time All-Star is off to a dreadful start this year, which could be hurting his trade stock. He's 2-3 in six starts with an 8.31 ERA.

That could be a product of him returning from Tommy John surgery, which often affects pitchers even after they make it back. But it's not a stretch to assume that Alcantara can find his groove again.

The Marlins will likely be sellers at the deadline. If Baltimore is in the mix, then it would make sense for them to acquire Alcantara, especially given that he has two years of team control left plus a club option for 2027.

He would be a one-year rental like Burnes was. It will certainly be interesting to see where things stand at the deadline.
