One wild Iron Bowl stat emerges from Auburn's firing of Hugh Freeze

18 hours ago 3

With Hugh Freeze gone at Auburn, the list of possible replacements is starting to stack up. Another week and another SEC program will be searching for a new head coach in 2026. While turnover can sometimes be the name of the game in coaching, Auburn will be cycling through their fourth coach in six years.

One crazy stat to surface from Freeze's firing was a look at the head-to-head competition in the Iron Bowl. This will be the seventh straight different coaching matchup in Alabama's biggest rivalry. One that former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton calls the biggest in all of college football.

Here's a look at the previous seven contests and the respective coaches on both sides from On3's Blake Byler.

Wild stat: This will be the seventh straight Iron Bowl with a unique head coaching matchup

2019: Saban vs Malzahn
2020: Sarkisian vs Malzahn
2021: Saban vs Harsin
2022: Saban vs Cadillac
2023: Saban vs Freeze

Nothing has stayed the same with these two programs since the 2019 season.

2019: Saban vs Malzahn
2020: Sarkisian vs Malzahn- Saban had Covid with Sark as the OC
2021: Saban vs Harsin- Malzahn fired
2022: Saban vs Cadillac- Harsin fired
2023: Saban vs Freeze
2024: DeBoer vs Freeze- Saban retired
2025: DeBoer vs Durkin- Freeze fired

This year's Iron Bowl could be a trap game for one-loss Alabama. Regardless of their respective records, the Tide and Tigers play each other close. It could also be a perfect ending for Auburn to sneak in and knock Alabama out of the Playoff picture at the last moment.

Alabama travels to Auburn for this year's edition of the rivalry game. Game time and TV have yet to be announced.
