The City Council is rolling out 26 new 9/11 street and public place co-namings and urging the state to adopt 9/11 curriculum in schools as the city prepares to mark 25 years since the attacks.
The proposed co-namings would stretch across all five boroughs, with a variety of new designations recalling the attacks, such as “Never Forget Way” in Howard Beach, Queens, ” “East Side 9/11 Remembrance Way” on the Upper East Side, and “9/11 Beacon Memorial Way” in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
The new names will also recognize nearby memorials, such as “Brooklyn 9/11 Wall of Remembrance Way” in Coney Island and survivor organizations, such as “Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk 9/11 Memorial Way” in Red Hook.
Brooklyn will get the most street namings, while Manhattan’s list includes street names recognizing employees of the Marsh & McLennan company killed in the Twin Towers and FDNY units that lost members in the attacks.
One particularly jarring proposed name — “Fresh Kills 9/11 Recovery Heroes Way” — refers to the Staten Island site where workers sifted Ground Zero debris for human remains and belongings.
“Kills” is from the Middle Dutch word kille, meaning a riverbed or water channel, according to the city’s Freshkills Park history — not a reference to the recovery work itself.
Speaker Julie Menin’s office also launched a webpage to remember 9/11, with an interactive map and additional context for each honorary street name.
The co-namings passed the Council Thursday.
At the same meeting the Council also adopted a resolution calling on the state to teach kids about 9/11 at school.
“Its important that young people learn about the unity that persisted in our city,” Menin said.
