NY Giants get bad news on Jaxson Dart's coaching preference

It’s been a tough week for the New York Giants, who lost their No. 1 offensive coordinator candidate to the Cleveland Browns.

Todd Monken was expected to follow John Harbaugh to the Big Apple, but he ended up with the Cleveland head coaching job. Now, the Giants are opening up a full search for their next offensive coordinator, and one of their top candidates has plenty of familiarity with Jaxson Dart.

Behind the scenes, Dart privately endorsed LSU coach Charlie Weis Jr. The young coordinator is a product of Ole Miss, where Dart came out of. However, it seems Weis will continue to follow his own path.

via @JordanRaanan: On Charlie Weis Jr. as the Giants OC: Jaxson Dart pushed for him. Showed support for his guy, per sources. Things can change but expectations as of now are that Weis Jr. plans to remain in college at LSU.

Weis landed interest from multiple NFL teams this cycle. The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly held discussions with the OC/QB coach as they looked to replace their one-and-done coach, Kevin Patullo. Weis removed himself from consideration, which raised plenty of questions about the Eagles’ operation.

But all things considered with the Giants, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Weis is satisfied with a role under Lane Kiffin for now. Barring any unexpected changes, Weis is bound to continue his coaching career at LSU.

The 32-year-old coordinator first entered the coaching space in 2011. He was an assistant at Florida. In 2012, Weis became a manager at Kansas, before garnering an assistant job at Alabama.

Weis’s first NFL experience came in 2017, when he was an offensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons. He returned to the NCAA in 2018, joining Florida Atlantic as the OC/QB coach. He would hold that same title for his stints at South Florida and Ole Miss.

When Dart played at Ole Miss, he fired up a three-year run in 2022. Over 39 games, Dart completed 65.7 percent of his passes for over 10,000 yards. He threw for 72 touchdowns and was picked off 22 times.

Weis and Ole Miss helped Dart become the NFL’s 2025 25th overall pick. He didn’t start for the New York Giants right away, but Dart quickly picked up the keys to the franchise. John Harbaugh will move forward knowing that Dart is the starting quarterback. Now, they have to find the right fit beyond Weis.
