(Bloomberg) — Artificial intelligence startup Cohere Inc. struck a deal to integrate its AI models into services provided by BCE Inc., Canada’s largest telecommunications firm by revenue.

The partnership will see Cohere make its “enterprise-grade” AI available to businesses and governments through BCE’s Bell Canada unit. Bell’s enterprise customers will be able to create AI agents and automate tasks without having to manage their own AI infrastructure, the companies said Monday in a joint statement.

Cohere, founded in 2019, is one of Canada’s largest startups, valued at about $5.5 billion last year after a financing round. Based in Toronto and San Francisco, it builds large language models and customizes them for businesses, and it’s backed by a series of big-name investors including Nvidia Corp.

Cohere Chief Executive Officer Aidan Gomez said in May the company had “more than doubled” its revenue since the start of the year and is approaching profitability. “We are seeing a total takeoff on the enterprise side of the business,” Gomez told Bloomberg Television.

As part of the alliance between the two companies, Bell will become Cohere’s preferred Canadian AI infrastructure partner, according to the statement, meaning the AI company will use Bell’s data centers and network, with the data remaining in Canada.

“Our partnership with Bell Canada will provide the Canadian government and enterprises with world-class options for sovereign, security-first AI,” said Gomez, who’s also Cohere’s co-founder.

Condé Nast, Forbes Media and other media companies sued Cohere in February, accusing the company of training its large-language models on their articles without permission.

Bloomberg LP has a content partnership with BCE’s media division, which owns BNN Bloomberg Television in Canada.
