The Denver Nuggets are off to a somewhat sloppy start, which isn't necessarily a bad thing this early in the season as they work to figure things out. The team had limited options this offseason, as its salary cap situation made significant moves difficult.
Denver has had some rough outings, including its win over the New Orleans Pelicans, when the team found itself trailing by a significant margin. After the game, Nikola Jokic went off on fans who booed the team.
“I think the fans that booed us are not welcome here anymore, if you ask me… if you guys follow us, you know that we never quit and we came back from much worse for similar situations,” Jokic said.
Then, on Monday, the Nuggets suffered a convincing loss to the Golden State Warriors. In fact, Jokic didn't play during the final four minutes of the game, as the Warriors secured their first win of the season.
“Nikola Jokić watched the final three and a half minutes of Monday night's matchup with the Golden State Warriors from the bench. Denver Nuggets head coach David Adelman had pulled his starters after a Gui Santos 3-pointer gave the visitors a 21-point lead — the sort of deficit that not even a three-time NBA Most Valuable Player could erase, even if he and his teammates were playing at the peak of their powers,” Yahoo Sports’ Dan Devine wrote.
Despite the slow start, Denver could be looking to make an addition to its roster. The Stein Line's Jake Fischer reported that the Nuggets have expressed interest in Kevin Porter Jr.
“Yet several teams, sources say, are still evaluating their respective backcourts and could emerge as potential Porter suitors depending on how things unfold. Two such teams, according to sources, are Denver and Sacramento,” Fischer wrote.
Acquiring Porter could be a good move for Denver, as he could provide streaky scoring off the bench. The Nuggets need to explore different options at this point, and bringing in a new face could be a good place to start.
Porter is currently playing on a $10 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. While he wouldn't be the biggest addition Denver could make, bringing him in could be a smart move that pays dividends, particularly if the Nuggets eventually pursue more significant trades.
