No team has ever done this before as Jazz and Wizards linked to historic draft swap

A proposed trade involving the top two picks in the 2026 NBA Draft would give both the Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards a chance to accelerate their rebuilds through different paths.

The deal would send the No. 1 pick, Bub Carrington and Cam Whitmore to Utah. In return, Washington would receive the No. 2 pick, Ace Bailey and a 2029 first-round pick that would come from the most favorable selection among Utah, Cleveland and Minnesota if it falls between No. 6 and No. 30.

The idea stands out because the first two selections in an NBA draft have never been traded for one another. That history makes the proposal notable on its own, but the real question is whether either team believes the move would improve its long-term outlook.

According to the analysis accompanying the proposal, Utah's side of the decision would largely depend on its evaluation of AJ Dybantsa. The Jazz have been linked to Dybantsa for an extended period, and moving up one spot would ensure they control the first selection.

That certainty would come at a high cost. Utah would not only move Bailey, who showed promise during his rookie season, but would also part with a future first-round pick. As a result, the organization would need to be convinced that Dybantsa is worth the additional assets required to secure the top selection.

The Wizards would approach the deal from a different position. By moving down one spot, Washington would still remain near the top of the draft while adding Bailey and a future first-round asset. That added draft capital could strengthen the team's rebuilding effort without requiring a major drop in draft position.

ESPN analyst Bobby Marks viewed the proposal through the lens of Utah's draft board. He noted that the trade becomes difficult if the Jazz believe AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer belong in the same tier. However, Marks also acknowledged that moving up could be worth considering if Utah views Dybantsa as a generational prospect.

For Washington, Marks argued that even a modest move back in the draft could be worthwhile if it adds Bailey and extra draft value. That balance between immediate talent and future assets is what makes the proposal one of the more intriguing draft scenarios under discussion.
