No. 1 basketball recruit AJ Williams makes major reclassification decision

One of the biggest names in high school basketball is accelerating his path toward the college level. AJ Williams, previously ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2028, is reclassifying into the Class of 2027. Williams revealed his decision to ESPN’s Paul Biancardi on Tuesday.

The move gives college basketball programs one fewer year to prepare for Williams’ recruitment. It also inserts another elite prospect into an already talented 2027 group.

Williams will enter the updated SC Next 100 as the No. 7 overall player in 2027, according to SportsCenter NEXT. Yann Kamagate will replace Williams as the top-ranked prospect in the 2028 class.

AJ Williams joins loaded 2027 recruiting class

Williams established himself as one of the country’s premier young prospects while competing against older players. The 6-foot-7 wing attends Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, Ga. He spent the summer playing for Team CP3 on Nike’s EYBL circuit and averaged 20.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists, according to 247Sports.

Those numbers helped show that Williams was ready to move up a class. Despite playing against older competition, he remained one of the circuit’s most productive scorers.

Williams is known for his ability to create offense at all three levels. He combines size and strength with polished footwork, shooting touch and the ability to score off the dribble. Those qualities made him the No. 1 player in 2028 and should allow him to remain among the country’s best prospects after moving into a more experienced class.

The reclassification does not change Williams’ earliest potential NBA timeline. Because of his age, he is still expected to be eligible for the 2028 NBA Draft.

College basketball powers pursuing AJ Williams

Williams’ decision could bring considerably more urgency to a recruitment that already includes several prominent programs. Duke, Auburn, Georgia and BYU are among the schools pursuing Williams, per 247Sports. He is expected to begin arranging visits as his recruitment moves forward.

The two Georgia programs could offer Williams an opportunity to remain close to home, while Duke, Auburn and BYU have all demonstrated an ability to attract high-level talent. More contenders are likely to become involved now that Williams is only one year away from beginning his college career. Reclassifying has become increasingly common among elite basketball prospects. It can allow a player to reach college sooner, begin earning at the college level earlier and move closer to becoming eligible for the NBA Draft.

Williams’ decision also continues a recent trend involving top-ranked recruits. Marcus Spears Jr., Bruce Branch III and Baba Oladotun are among the other highly rated prospects who have moved into an earlier graduating class.

The next question is where Williams will play. His reclassification answered when he expects to reach college, but it also turned a developing recruitment into one of the biggest races in the 2027 cycle.
